All about us

Andrew Holmes & Son was established in December of 1992 officially opening their first funeral home in Hounslow, which was originally an auto factors on Whitton Road close to the Richmond and Twickenham borders.

Andrew and his wife Susan had gained much experience in funeral services both working for The Co-operative at the age of 17 before moving on to T H Saunders of Richmond.

Holmes and Son began as a family owned and run business. Andrew entered into a partnership with his brothers David and John Holmes, and older brother Gary, who drove the Hearse during the day of funerals.

“Andrew’s precept was to treat every family in their time of need as if they were his own.”

At the time, the firm had no limousines and only had one hearse. Each member of staff had to turn his or her hand to anything. In the early days, Andrew continued his bread round in the early hours whilst arranging and looking after funerals by day.

At a time when families had a choice of only three or four Funeral Directors in the local boroughs, Holmes and Son had a very successful first year. The high standards and attention to detail and the choice offered to families aided in building their reputation around the community.

David and John Holmes left after a year to continue separate business interests whilst Andrew and Susan, assisted by Gary and the help of family friends and the recruitment of their first full time employees, the business grew opening their second Chapel of Rest on Richmond Road, East Twickenham.

“Andrew Holmes & Son continued to grow and were given the privilege to become the Funeral Directors for the prestigious Royal Star and Garter for disabled servicemen on top of Richmond Hill, a relationship that would long continue.”

Their fleet of vehicles expanded with the addition of two new limousines, and in 1995, Andrew Holmes & Son acquired a fellow independent, Mssrs I.V. Bailey of Powder Mill Lane, Twickenham which fitted into the location very well with the two existing funeral homes.

In October 1997, Andrew Holmes & Son expanded across the River Thames to Chessington, in the Royal Borough of Kingston.

One year later, Andrew passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 36 years.

Although Andrew is no longer with us the success of the firm is a testament to his vision. Our team at Andrew Holmes & Son are proud to continue to uphold his values.

“Andrew Holmes & Son continues its good work in an industry where the highest standards must be continually met and is always striving for new ways to improve its service for families in their time of need.”
